Periodontics (Gum Treatment)
Periodontics is the branch of dentistry that examines and treats diseases occurring in the gums and tissues surrounding the teeth. Diseases occurring in the gums and surrounding tissues are generally called periodontal diseases.
When oral and dental care is not done regularly and correctly, food residues accumulate on and between the teeth and form a layer called bacterial plaque. This situation causes an unhealthy oral environment, cavities and gingivitis. Gingivitis is a very harmful and serious disease, and the initial stage of this inflammatory condition caused by careless care is called "GINGIVITIS". This stage is the initial stage of the disease and only the gums are affected by the bacterial plaque; Redness, swelling and bleeding are observed in the gums. Its treatment is achieved through professional scaling and regular oral care performed by dentists. Since it is an early stage, the disease can be controlled without the need for painful treatments and the healing process begins.
What happens if gingivitis is not treated?
The vast majority of tooth losses, 70%, are caused by gingivitis. Inflammation that is not diagnosed and treated in the initial stage progresses and leads to the destruction of the gum fibers and the alveolar bone that holds the tooth. In this stage, called periodontitis, the healing process is much longer and more painful. Its treatment requires scaling, performed by dentists, and curettage using special tools. In cases where the diagnosis and treatment of the periodontitis stage is delayed and the disease progresses, periodontal surgical procedures are required, and the treatment is supported by the use of antibiotics and mouthwashes.
