Smile Design

Even though the solution to problems such as toothache, bad breath and tooth loss comes to mind when oral care is mentioned, smile aesthetics related to teeth and gums also have a very important place today. Aesthetic problems resulting from decayed teeth, gum diseases, irregularities in tooth alignment, abnormal discoloration and tooth loss can negatively affect people's social lives. In addition, it can cause a lack of self-confidence and may even cause people to hesitate to laugh in public.

Sometimes, even though a person has healthy teeth, he may want to improve the disproportion, shape or deformity of his teeth and gums in an aesthetic sense. A beautiful smile will not only give the person psychological strength, but will also create a better impression in the people around him.

With the advancement of technology and scientific studies, more beautiful smiles can now be achieved with many methods and the concept of "aesthetic dentistry" has a greater place in our lives.

What is smile design?
When it comes to aesthetic dentistry, one of the first concepts that comes to mind is "smile design". Smile design; It is the process of restoring the teeth and gums, whose aesthetic appearance has deteriorated for various reasons, to a natural and beautiful appearance as much as possible, taking into account the facial shapes and needs of the patients. Smile design, which is a multidisciplinary approach, is carried out by applying many procedures together.

What procedures does smile design involve?
Since each patient's aesthetic needs will be different, the procedures to be performed are determined individually. While determining these procedures, the patient; Factors such as facial features, gender, age and expectations are taken into account.

First of all, existing decayed teeth and gum diseases are treated and tooth cleaning procedures are performed. Afterwards, the procedures are determined according to the needs of the patients. These processes are generally; Gum aesthetic interventions called gingivectomy, teeth whitening (bleaching) methods, compensation of tooth deficiencies with implant and prosthesis applications, porcelain laminates and veneers, zirconium coatings and orthodontic treatments (braces treatment).

How is Smile Design done?
In smile design, it is very important to first understand the aesthetic expectations of the patient and determine the needs correctly. Problems are identified and plans are made on models prepared using measurements taken from the patient's mouth. Then, measurements are made using special programs on the computer with the patients' oral and facial photographs, and the adaptation to the face shape is calculated. The most approximate images that will occur after the treatment are presented to the patient with programs and temporary restorations prepared in accordance with the patient's mouth, and their opinions are taken.

Once the planning is completed, if orthodontic treatment is not required, the existing gum level irregularities are corrected first. In cases where there are missing teeth, the planned implant procedures and other necessary surgical applications are carried out. After the healing periods of the surgical procedures are completed, teeth whitening procedures are applied if needed. Following this stage, any visual and structural imperfections in the teeth are sometimes corrected with aesthetic composite fillings. If this method is insufficient, porcelain laminate veneers and crowns, as well as zirconium crowns, come into play. For porcelain laminate applications, either no grinding is done on the teeth or minimal grinding is performed. If porcelain or zirconium applications are deemed appropriate, patient feedback is taken into account during the trials, and some adjustments may be made. During all these gum and tooth applications and trials, the shape and contour of the lips are also considered, and the final design is achieved.

Sometimes, medical aesthetic applications are also utilized during smile design. The smile can be further enhanced with dermal fillers and similar procedures applied to the lip and facial areas.
