Endodontics (Root Canal Treatment)

Endodontics is a branch of dentistry that investigates, diagnoses and treats diseases in the dental pulp (nerves and vessels inside the tooth) and periapical tissues surrounding the tooth. Root Canal Treatment is a form of treatment within this branch of science that aims to save the tooth from disease.

If the dental pulp is damaged in advanced caries, fractures, and physical impacts that exceed the resistance of the tooth, this affects the vitality of the tooth, causes inflammation, and then severe pain, swelling, and inevitable tooth loss occur. The purpose of Root Canal Treatment is to treat a severely damaged tooth and preserve its existence in the mouth. Thus, tooth loss is prevented and therefore the risk of loss of functional and aesthetic appearance is eliminated.

How is Root Canal Treatment performed?

For Root Canal Treatment, first the tooth is anesthetized, the inflammations occurring at the tip of the tooth root, the dental pulp and the canals are cleaned and disinfected. The root tip of the tooth and the opened canals are completely filled without leakage. Afterwards, depending on the rate of material loss in the tooth, the tooth is filled with classical filling material or restoration is carried out with veneer alternatives.

How healthy is a root canal treated tooth?

Even though the tooth loses its vitality after treatment, it continues to exist in the mouth. However, since all the nerves that hold on to life are removed and the inside of the tooth is emptied, it becomes more fragile and sensitive. Therefore, it is necessary to pay attention to its use and maintenance. Creating a new tooth over the tooth with veneer alternatives can be preferred as a precaution against these fractures and thus the life of the tooth is further extended.
